The Connection Between Sleep and Your Upper Cervical Spine

Sleep is not just a time to rest — it's when your body and nervous system undergo essential repair and regeneration. Poor sleep can affect energy, mood, immune function, and even pain perception. But did you know that the alignment of your upper cervical spine — the top two bones in your neck — can play a crucial role in how well you sleep?

How the Brainstem Regulates Sleep

The brainstem, located at the base of the brain and protected by the atlas (C1) and axis (C2), controls many vital functions, including:

  • Sleep-wake cycles (circadian rhythms)
  • Heart rate
  • Respiratory patterns
  • Nervous system balance between sympathetic ("fight or flight") and parasympathetic ("rest and heal")

When these top cervical vertebrae are misaligned, even slightly, they can interfere with brainstem function. This interference can lead to:

  • Difficulty falling asleep
  • Frequent waking during the night
  • Shallow or non-restorative sleep
  • Increased nighttime muscle tension or restless legs

Why Misalignment Impacts Sleep

Misalignments in the upper cervical spine can compress nerves, restrict blood flow, and impede cerebrospinal fluid circulation. All of these factors can keep your nervous system in a state of heightened alertness. Even if your mind feels tired, your body may remain in sympathetic mode, making deep restorative sleep difficult.

Patients with long-term sleep disturbances often experience compounded effects over time: chronic fatigue, poor memory, irritability, weakened immunity, and increased susceptibility to pain and headaches.

How Upper Cervical Care Helps

Upper cervical chiropractic adjustments are precise and gentle. By restoring proper alignment, these adjustments:

  • Reduce interference to the brainstem
  • Allow nerves to communicate more efficiently
  • Support parasympathetic activity so your body can relax
  • Improve blood flow and cerebrospinal fluid circulation

Many patients notice a dramatic improvement in sleep quality within days to weeks of care. Falling asleep becomes easier, staying asleep feels natural, and mornings start with more energy and focus.

Supporting Sleep Naturally

While upper cervical care addresses root causes, complementary practices can enhance results:

  1. Consistent sleep schedule: Going to bed and waking at the same time daily regulates circadian rhythms.
  2. Limit screen time before bed: Blue light exposure interferes with melatonin production, the hormone responsible for sleep.
  3. Relaxation techniques: Deep breathing, meditation, or gentle yoga can calm the nervous system.
  4. Create a restful environment: A dark, cool, quiet room promotes restorative sleep.
  5. Nutrition and hydration: Avoid large meals or caffeine close to bedtime to support digestive and nervous system comfort.

The Takeaway

Your sleep is a reflection of your nervous system's health. Misalignments in the atlas and axis can subtly disrupt brainstem function, leaving the body unable to fully relax and repair during the night. By addressing these misalignments through upper cervical care, combined with supportive lifestyle habits, your body can achieve the deep, restorative sleep it needs to function at its best.

Rest is not a luxury — it's essential for healing, energy, and overall health. Supporting your upper cervical spine may be the missing link in finally experiencing the sleep your body deserves.

Concussion Recovery: Why the Neck Matters

Most concussion protocols focus entirely on the brain — but the research is clear: every concussion involves the neck. The force required to cause a concussion is ten times greater than what's needed to injure the upper cervical spine. That means the atlas and axis are almost always affected too. Here's why that matters for recovery, and what gets missed when the neck is ignored.

I’ve been able to golf without pain and my overall quality of life has gone up.
Dr. Jon and Dr. Kyara are amazing! I started seeing them last fall. I had chronic lower back pain and spasms for half my life, about 18 years. After about 2 months of treatment my pain and spasms disappeared and they haven't come back! I've been able to golf without pain and my overall quality of life has gone up. I was so used to the pain that I was unaware of how my much it was hurting every area of my life. I HIGHLY recommend them! Thank you guys!
