Vertigo

Not All Vertigo Is the Same

Vertigo is the false sense that you or the room is spinning. It is a symptom, not a diagnosis, and it has several different causes. Knowing which type you have matters, because the right care depends on the source.

  • BPPV (positional vertigo): brief spinning triggered by head movements, caused by tiny crystals in the inner ear.
  • Ménière’s disease: episodes of vertigo with hearing changes and ear fullness. Learn more about Ménière’s disease.
  • Vestibular issues: inner-ear or nerve inflammation affecting balance.
  • Cervicogenic vertigo: dizziness and imbalance that come from the upper neck rather than the inner ear.

Because the causes overlap, a proper evaluation is the first step. For inner-ear and balance testing, we often refer locally to the Idaho Elks Hearing and Balance Center.

Signs Your Vertigo May Be Coming From Your Neck

Cervicogenic vertigo tends to show a few telltale patterns:

  • Dizziness that worsens with neck movement or sustained postures
  • A sense of unsteadiness more than true spinning
  • Vertigo paired with neck pain or stiffness
  • A history of whiplash, concussion, or head and neck injury

If this sounds familiar, our deeper guide on neck pain and dizziness is worth a read.

Why the Upper Neck Affects Balance

The atlas and axis — the top two bones of your spine — sit right beside the brainstem, which helps coordinate balance. They also carry sensors that tell your brain where your head is in space. When this area is misaligned, those signals can become unreliable, contributing to dizziness. We use 3D CBCT imaging to measure the area precisely, then use gentle, no-twisting corrections to help restore normal signaling. Benefits of Chiropractic Care for Vertigo

Chiropractic care offers several benefits for individuals suffering from vertigo:

  • Non-Invasive Treatment: Chiropractic adjustments provide a natural, drug-free approach to vertigo relief.
  • Long-Term Relief: By addressing the root causes of vertigo, chiropractic care can reduce the frequency and intensity of symptoms.
  • Improved Nervous System Function: Proper spinal alignment enhances nervous system function, which can help alleviate vertigo symptoms.
  • Overall Wellness: Regular chiropractic care promotes overall health and well-being, reducing the likelihood of vertigo and other health issues.

My son has had one headache in 4 months. One! And his sensory issues are not even a thing anymore.
Dr. Jon and Kyara are amazing!!! I lived with severe neck and shoulder pain for 5 years, trying everything you can think of for relief. Nothing helped. One day I saw a video on Instagram that just spoke to me. It was everything I was experiencing. The videos are so informative. I called that day and set an appointment. Kyara asked me before my first adjustment if I was ready for the first day of my new life and in my mind I truly wasn’t convinced that it was going to be as magical as it has been. I’ve been there and tried that so I was hopeful but not 100% convinced. She was right, it was the first day of my new life. My pain is nothing like it was, it used to be all I could think about. I’m not perfect yet but I’m on my way there. Peak Chiropractic has changed my life. Best decision I have ever made for myself. My son (13) got a scan for frequent headaches and sensory issues. Dr. Jon had me bring him in for a scan and again was hopeful but not fully convinced and once again they were right. My son has had one headache in 4 months. One! And his sensory issues are not even a thing anymore. It has been amazing for him and I’m so grateful he is getting treatment as well. On top of all the goodness we have had since starting we also feel cared for by both Dr. Jon and Kyara. They feel like family and care about us. Kyara is also super into all around health and I am always learning things from her each time I go. Definitely life changing all the way around and I highly recommend checking them out. You will not be disappointed!

I haven’t had a single symptom since the adjustment!
I was working in Boise and seen an ad for Peak Chiropractic, I suffered with migraines, vertigo and severe nerve pain in my shoulders for 15+ years and thought it was something I was just going to live with. After an informative consultation then some 3-D imaging, a severe misalignment was found in my upper cervical area. Dr. Johnathon Finney made one adjustment before I had to go back home to Kentucky and it changed my life! I haven’t had a single symptom since the adjustment! AND he found a doctor near my home town that he went to school with and shared my files so I can have care when I am home and when I am in Boise for work! I cannot thank Dr. Johnathon enough for giving me my life back and think everyone needs to experience what Peak Chiropractic and their upper cervical care can do for them!

Vertigo & Upper Cervical Care: Common Questions

Can a chiropractor help with vertigo?

When vertigo has a neck-related component, gentle upper cervical care may help by addressing misalignment in the upper neck that can affect balance signaling. It is not a fit for every type of vertigo, which is why we start with a careful evaluation and refer out when the cause is purely inner-ear.

What is cervicogenic vertigo?

Cervicogenic vertigo is dizziness or unsteadiness that originates in the upper neck rather than the inner ear. It often comes with neck pain or stiffness and tends to change with head and neck position.

Is upper cervical care safe?

Upper cervical care uses precise, low-force corrections with no twisting, cracking, or popping. We image first and tailor each correction, which makes it a gentle option for sensitive conditions like vertigo.

What Military Neck Actually Is

Military Neck Treatment in Boise: Restoring Your Natural Neck Curve

"Military neck" is the nickname for what happens when that curve flattens out, straightens, or in some cases reverses. The name comes from the rigid, at-attention posture it can create, like a soldier standing very upright. You may also hear it called loss of cervical lordosis or cervical kyphosis. Whatever it's called, the core issue is the same: the neck has lost the natural curve it's supposed to have.

Migraine Treatment in Boise: Calming the Nervous System With Upper Cervical Care

If you live with migraines, you already know they are nothing like an ordinary headache. The light that suddenly feels too bright, the nausea, the pressure that can steal an entire day — these aren't a matter of "just pushing through." At Peak Upper Cervical Center here in Boise, we look at migraines a little differently. Instead of only chasing the pain when it hits, we ask why your nervous system is tipping into a migraine in the first place.
