Fostering a Strong Spine as Kids Head Back to School: Vital Advice for Parents

As the school year begins, it's crucial for parents to ensure their children maintain good spinal health. Poor posture, heavy backpacks, and prolonged sitting can lead to spinal issues that affect overall health. Here are some essential tips to help your kids foster a strong spine as they head back to school.

Importance of Proper Posture

Encouraging proper posture is vital for preventing back pain and promoting a healthy spine. Remind your children to:

  • Sit Upright: Use chairs that support the lower back, keeping feet flat on the floor.
  • Stand Tall: Align ears with shoulders and hips, avoiding slouching or leaning forward.

Choosing the Right Backpack

A heavy or improperly worn backpack can strain a child's spine. Follow these guidelines to ensure your child's backpack is spine-friendly:

  • Weight Distribution: The backpack should not exceed 10-15% of the child's body weight.
  • Straps and Padding: Opt for backpacks with wide, padded straps and a padded back.
  • Wearing Technique: Encourage using both shoulder straps and adjusting them so the bag sits evenly in the middle of the back.

Encouraging Physical Activity

Physical activity is essential for maintaining a healthy spine. Encourage your children to:

  • Take Breaks: Regular breaks from sitting to stretch and move around.
  • Engage in Exercise: Activities like swimming, walking, and sports strengthen back muscles and improve posture.

Regular Chiropractic Check-Ups

Regular visits to a chiropractor can help ensure your child's spine is healthy and properly aligned. Chiropractic care can:

  • Identify Issues Early: Detect and address spinal issues before they become serious.
  • Provide Tailored Advice: Offer personalized recommendations for maintaining spinal health.

The Gut-Brain Connection: Why Your Gut Health Impacts Your Nervous System

Here's what that means for you.

Concussion Recovery: Why the Neck Matters

Concussion Recovery: Why the Neck Matters

Most concussion protocols focus entirely on the brain — but the research is clear: every concussion involves the neck. The force required to cause a concussion is ten times greater than what's needed to injure the upper cervical spine. That means the atlas and axis are almost always affected too. Here's why that matters for recovery, and what gets missed when the neck is ignored.

I will never go anywhere else
I highly recommend this chiropractor. I was hesitant to see a chiropractor because I had broken my back when I was younger and hate adjustments. That being said, I will never go anywhere else. I trust and feel comfortable here. The entire environment is comfortable and every person I talked to here was so personable and nice. Like I said, I highly recommend going here!

Since starting upper cervical chiropractic, there have been lasting changes in my upper and lower back
I have used conventional chiropractic (spinal manipulation, actuators, etc) for over 40 years. These adjustments never held or stabilized my issues. Since starting upper cervical chiropractic, there have been lasting changes in my upper and lower back and in my right hip. I have been to the Peak office for over 4 months now and am completely excited that as I enter my 80’s, I have had these significant improvements in my physical being. Thank you Peak staff!
