What is an Upper Cervical Chiropractor?

An Upper Cervical Chiropractor specializes in addressing misalignments in the upper cervical spine, specifically the atlas (C1) and axis (C2) vertebrae. These two vertebrae play a crucial role in supporting the head and protecting the brainstem. When they are out of alignment, it can disrupt the entire nervous system, causing a range of health issues, from neck pain to migraines and vertigo.

At Boise Peak Chiropractic, our upper cervical chiropractors use advanced imaging technology to pinpoint misalignments and provide gentle, targeted adjustments. Our focus is on helping the body heal by restoring the proper function of the nervous system without using forceful or aggressive techniques.

How Upper Cervical Chiropractors Work

The upper cervical chiropractic approach starts with a detailed evaluation, often including 3D imaging or X-rays, to assess the condition of your upper spine. Once the misalignment is identified, our chiropractor uses precise, gentle techniques to realign the vertebrae. This method is highly effective in relieving pressure on the nerves and allowing the body to heal naturally.

Patients often notice a difference after just a few sessions, with significant improvements in symptoms such as headaches, neck pain, and balance issues.

Upper cervical chiropractors can help with a wide range of conditions that are often connected to misalignments in the upper spine. Some of the conditions our patients seek treatment for include:

  • Migraines & Chronic Headaches: Upper cervical misalignments can lead to pressure on the brainstem, causing persistent headaches and migraines.
  • Vertigo & Balance Problems: Misalignments in the upper spine can interfere with balance, causing dizziness and vertigo.
  • Chronic Neck Pain & Stiffness: Our upper cervical chiropractors address neck pain and stiffness by targeting the specific areas that are out of alignment.
  • TMJ & Jaw Pain: The upper spine plays a key role in jaw alignment, and our chiropractic adjustments can relieve TMJ pain and discomfort.
  • Nerve Disorders: Upper cervical misalignments can compress nerves, leading to a range of neurological symptoms that can be alleviated by precise adjustments.

Symptoms Treated by Upper Cervical Chiropractors

Misalignments in the upper spine can cause various symptoms, many of which patients don’t immediately associate with spinal issues. Common symptoms that our upper cervical chiropractor treats include:

  • Chronic Neck Pain: If you have persistent neck pain that hasn’t improved with other treatments, upper cervical care may provide relief.
  • Frequent Headaches or Migraines: By addressing upper cervical misalignments, our chiropractors can relieve the pressure that often leads to headaches.
  • Dizziness or Vertigo: Upper cervical misalignments can disrupt the body’s balance, but realignment can restore proper function.
  • Tingling or Numbness in Limbs: Nerve compression in the upper spine can cause tingling or numbness, which our chiropractors work to relieve through gentle adjustments.
  • Jaw Pain or TMJ Symptoms: Our upper cervical chiropractors can help alleviate TMJ symptoms by addressing the spine’s alignment.

Since starting upper cervical chiropractic, there have been lasting changes in my upper and lower back
I have used conventional chiropractic (spinal manipulation, actuators, etc) for over 40 years. These adjustments never held or stabilized my issues. Since starting upper cervical chiropractic, there have been lasting changes in my upper and lower back and in my right hip. I have been to the Peak office for over 4 months now and am completely excited that as I enter my 80’s, I have had these significant improvements in my physical being. Thank you Peak staff!

They are very personable and you can tell that genuinely care about your well being.
Very impressed with Peak since day one! The staff is absolutely amazing. They are very personable and you can tell that genuinely care about your well being. I have been dealing with weekly migraines for almost 20 years. I was never willing to go down a more traditional pharmaceutical path of treating symptoms. I wanted to get to the root cause which is literally Peak’s vision behind every patient. I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel and I could not be more excited!

The Upper Cervical Complex: A Keystone for Spinal Health

Most people think of spinal health as something that works from the bottom up. But the evidence points in the opposite direction — your spine's integrity starts at the very top. The atlas (C1) and axis (C2) vertebrae form the foundation of the entire nervous system. When they're aligned, everything works better. When they're not, the effects can ripple from your neck all the way down.

Understanding Posture: How "Tech Neck" Affects Your Nervous System

Most people know that staring down at a phone all day causes neck tension. What fewer people realize is that forward head posture — even by just a few degrees — can place serious stress on the brainstem and disrupt nervous system function throughout the entire body. Here's what's really happening, and what you can do about it.

The Benefits of Red Light Therapy: Healing at the Cellular Level

Red light therapy is gaining serious attention in the wellness community — and for good reason. From pain relief and faster recovery to nervous system support and better sleep, this non-invasive tool works at the most fundamental level: your cells. Here's what the science says and how it can fit into your health routine.

How Neck Alignment Impacts Energy Levels

Fatigue that won't go away — no matter how much you sleep, eat well, or cut back on stress — may not be a lifestyle problem at all. It may be your nervous system running on empty because of a misalignment in your upper cervical spine. Here's how the atlas and axis affect your body's energy from the inside out.
