Understanding Facial Nerves and How Chiropractic Care Can Help

Facial nerves are responsible for controlling various functions, including movement, sensation, and expression in the face. When these nerves are affected by injury, compression, or misalignment, it can result in conditions like facial nerve pain, tingling, or even Bell’s Palsy. At Peak Chiropractic, our upper cervical chiropractors offer gentle, targeted adjustments to relieve pressure on the nerves and promote healing, providing natural relief from facial nerve pain.

What Are Facial Nerves?

Facial nerves play a critical role in how we express emotions, move facial muscles, and feel sensations like touch and temperature. The primary facial nerve, the trigeminal nerve, is one of the largest cranial nerves and is responsible for transmitting sensory information from the face to the brain. Damage or pressure on this nerve can lead to facial pain, numbness, and conditions like trigeminal neuralgia.

In addition to the trigeminal nerve, other cranial nerves control muscles in the face, such as the facial nerve itself. When these nerves are affected by issues in the upper cervical spine, it can lead to dysfunction, including pain, tingling, and weakness in the facial muscles.

How Upper Cervical Chiropractic Can Help with Facial Nerve Pain

Facial nerve pain can often be traced back to issues in the upper cervical spine. Misalignments in the atlas (C1) and axis (C2) vertebrae can place pressure on the brainstem and the nerves that pass through this region, including the cranial nerves. When these misalignments are corrected, pressure on the nerves is relieved, which can significantly reduce facial nerve pain and related symptoms.

At Peak Chiropractic, we specialize in upper cervical adjustments that are designed to restore proper alignment and function. By using advanced diagnostic tools, we identify misalignments and create a personalized care plan to target the root cause of facial nerve dysfunction.

Chiropractic Care for Trigeminal Neuralgia and Bell’s Palsy

Two common conditions that affect facial nerves are trigeminal neuralgia and Bell’s Palsy. These conditions can cause intense pain, facial paralysis, and discomfort, making daily activities challenging.

  • Trigeminal Neuralgia: This condition causes sudden, severe facial pain, often triggered by everyday actions like chewing or talking. Upper cervical chiropractic care can help reduce the frequency and intensity of trigeminal neuralgia attacks by relieving pressure on the trigeminal nerve.
  • Bell’s Palsy: Characterized by sudden weakness or paralysis on one side of the face, Bell’s Palsy is often linked to nerve inflammation. Chiropractic adjustments to the upper cervical spine can help reduce inflammation and improve nerve function, speeding up recovery.

How Chiropractic Care Supports Nerve Healing:

Chiropractic care works by reducing pressure on the nerves and improving communication between the brain and body. Proper alignment in the upper cervical spine allows the nervous system to function optimally, which can promote natural healing and reduce the symptoms of nerve dysfunction.

Military neck compared to normal cervical curve alignment

Military Neck Treatment in Boise

Military Neck Treatment in Boise

"Military neck" is the nickname for what happens when that curve flattens out, straightens, or in some cases reverses. The name comes from the rigid, at-attention posture it can create, like a soldier standing very upright. You may also hear it called loss of cervical lordosis or cervical kyphosis. Whatever it's called, the core issue is the same: the neck has lost the natural curve it's supposed to have.

They are very personable and you can tell that genuinely care about your well being.
Very impressed with Peak since day one! The staff is absolutely amazing. They are very personable and you can tell that genuinely care about your well being. I have been dealing with weekly migraines for almost 20 years. I was never willing to go down a more traditional pharmaceutical path of treating symptoms. I wanted to get to the root cause which is literally Peak’s vision behind every patient. I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel and I could not be more excited!

Was able to stand up straight for the first time in years, hip discomfort and shoulder pain were immediately relieved
After trying chiropractic treatments and months of physical therapy that produced little to no results we had about given up on the medical field. Fortunately Connie found Peak Chiropractic! After her first adjustment she had amazing results, she was able to stand up straight for the first time in years, hip discomfort and shoulder pain were immediately relieved which led me to quickly make an appointment. Range of motion in my neck was pretty much non-existent and after my first adjustment was tremendously improved! Connie and I both continue to see great improvements in our overall health and are amazed at our progress. It is definitely a journey well worth taking. Drs. John and Kyara are both very knowledgeable and professional with the added bonus of being wonderful and caring people, their passion to help is very evident in everything they do. Highly recommended, it is a life changing experience!
