Multiple Sclerosis (MS)

What is Multiple Sclerosis?

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system (CNS), which includes the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves. In MS, the immune system mistakenly attacks the protective covering of nerve fibers, called the myelin sheath. This damage disrupts the flow of signals between the brain and body, leading to a variety of symptoms that can affect mobility, coordination, vision, and more.

How Multiple Sclerosis Progresses

MS is a highly individualized condition, with symptoms and progression varying widely between patients. The disease typically follows one of four patterns:

  • Relapsing-Remitting MS (RRMS): Periods of symptom flare-ups followed by partial or complete recovery.
  • Primary Progressive MS (PPMS): A gradual worsening of symptoms without significant remission.
  • Secondary Progressive MS (SPMS): Begins as relapsing-remitting but transitions into a more progressive form.
  • Progressive-Relapsing MS (PRMS): A rare form characterized by steadily worsening symptoms and acute relapses.

Common Symptoms of MS

While MS symptoms depend on the location and extent of nerve damage, common issues include:

  • Fatigue and weakness
  • Muscle spasms or stiffness
  • Numbness or tingling, especially in the limbs
  • Difficulty walking or balancing
  • Vision problems, such as blurred or double vision
  • Cognitive issues, including memory problems or difficulty concentrating
  • Chronic pain

How Chiropractic Care Supports MS Patients

Although chiropractic care cannot cure MS, it can play a crucial role in managing symptoms and supporting overall health. Misalignments in the spine, particularly in the upper cervical region, can exacerbate nervous system dysfunction. Chiropractic adjustments help restore proper alignment, improve nerve communication, and reduce muscle tension, making it easier for your body to function optimally despite the challenges of MS.

Symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis and Their Impact

The symptoms of MS can be unpredictable and vary in intensity, often fluctuating over time. For many, MS symptoms interfere with daily life, limiting physical activity, work performance, and social engagement.

Common MS Symptoms Addressed with Chiropractic Care

  • Fatigue: One of the most common symptoms of MS, fatigue can be debilitating and significantly impact quality of life. Chiropractic care improves nervous system efficiency, helping reduce energy drain and support overall vitality.
  • Muscle Spasms and Stiffness: MS often causes involuntary muscle contractions and tightness. Chiropractic adjustments and soft tissue therapy help release tension and improve flexibility.
  • Numbness and Tingling: Damage to the myelin sheath can disrupt nerve signals, causing sensory disturbances. Chiropractic care enhances nerve communication, reducing abnormal sensations.
  • Pain and Discomfort: Chronic pain in the back, neck, or extremities can result from MS-related nerve damage or compensatory movement patterns. Spinal adjustments relieve tension and improve alignment, alleviating pain.
  • Balance and Coordination Issues: Spinal misalignments can exacerbate balance problems. Chiropractic care restores alignment and helps improve coordination and stability.
  • Cognitive Symptoms: While less direct, better nervous system function achieved through chiropractic care may also support mental clarity and focus.

Long-Term Benefits of Chiropractic Care for MS

By maintaining proper spinal alignment and nervous system function, chiropractic care can help MS patients manage symptoms more effectively, improve mobility, and enhance overall quality of life. It provides a non-invasive, drug-free option that complements other treatments and supports long-term health.

With a 3D imaging machine you visually can seen how out of align you are and then a plan of action to get you back to alignment
After dealing with migraines my whole life, then panic attacks and most recently vertigo, which is the absolute worst experience to go through. I was determined to find help and that is where I found Peak Chiropractic with Dr. John and Dr. Kyara. They are warm, welcoming and above all experts in the field of Upper Cervical Chiropractic Care. They walk you through the process step by step and with a 3D imaging machine you visually can seen how out of align you are and then a plan of action to get you back to alignment. The adjustments are gentle and precise. No cracking or extreme movement of the head, which I can't handle. The last time I saw a chiropractor the extreme movement of my head led me to vomit in the bathroom right after the appointment. Not the case at Peak Chiropractic! I am on a treatment plan that started in February and will go until July and that gives my neck time to adjust and heal and then hopefully maintenance after. I can't tell you how happy I am to finally feel better, sleep better. I don't have the wave of dizziness that I was having on the daily. I also suffer from panic attacks driving and that in itself is debilitating. Even though I came to Peak for migraine and vertigo issues, I had no idea how much it would help me in gaining back my confidence to drive. I no longer get in my car with the feeling of dread and panic. That in itself is life changing!! So thankful and grateful for the care I am receiving and the healing and recovery process. I highly recommend you take the time to get the help you need if suffering from migraines, vertigo or panic attacks. No reason to be miserable when you can get the help you need and through Amazing people like Dr. John and Dr. Kyara!
